With 1.7 million reported cases per year, chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD in the U.S. It is transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Chlamydia is a bacterial std caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis, chlamydia can be silent and asymptomatic, which contributes to its spread. If left untreated, it can cause permanent damage to the reproductive system. If identified, it can be easily cured with prescription antibiotics.

Symptoms of Chlamydia

Women often don’t experience symptoms from a chlamydia infection. If they do, symptoms can include painful urination, abnormal vaginal discharge, painful urination, rectal pain, eye inflammation, lower back pain, stomachache, nausea, fever, painful sex, and sore throat.

Commonly, men may not experience chlamydia symptoms either. Possible symptoms can include penile discharge, eye inflammation, a burning feeling on the tip of the penis, testicular swelling and pain, and sore throat.

How is Chlamydia Tested?

Unlike most STD tests that we offer, you may choose to have either your blood or urine screened for chlamydia. Urine testing is standard for chlamydia and suitable for most cases because most infections are local to the urogenital area. That being said, chlamydia tests by urine sample do not detect infections of other sites like the throat, anus, or eye (inclusion conjunctivitis). A chlamydia blood test will be able to detect an infection, wherever it was contracted.
