About Our Lactose Tolerance Test
Our Lactose Intolerance/Tolerance lab testing is a test panel that uses a blood sample to determine if you have an intolerance to Lactose, a milk sugar. Four 1-millimeter blood samples are collected at different intervals after the individual's fasting blood sample is collected-- after which the patient takes a 50-gram dose of lactose and a blood sample is collected after 1/2-hour, 1-hour, 2-hours, and 3-hours.
Lactose allergies are also known as lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance affects 60% of adults. In the case of a lactose allergy, the body cannot break down the lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. This causes abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, nausea, and diarrhea, and skin rashes.
Did you know: Lactose intolerance tends to occur overtime in adults with occurrences more often in Native Americans and people of South America, Asian or African decent.
Fasting required. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 8 hours before testing.
