About Our COVID-19 Antibody Test

This serology blood test identifies the presence of antibodies that indicate that a person had an immune response to COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2). A positive result to this antibody (IgG) test indicates that you may have had previous exposure to COVID-19 and your body has developed antibodies.

Although It may take up to 14 days after the onset of symptoms for antibodies to be developed within the body, 91% of people develop such antibodies within the first 8-13 days. Some people infected with COVID-19 will never exhibit symptoms but will have a detectable antibody response. While there is scientific belief that the presence of antibodies may provide immunity to future infections, data is still being gathered to state this conclusively.

This is an antibody test used to detect the presence of antibodies indicating a immune system response to a past COVID-19 infection, not to diagnose active infections. Please follow up with your primary care physician or a local hospital for a COVID-19 diagnostic test if you believe you may have an active infection or if you are currently feeling sick.

If you have felt feverish in the last 3 days or experienced any other COVID-19 symptoms such as loss of smell or taste, shortness of breath, dry cough, feeling weak or lethargic, lightheadedness or dizziness, vomiting or diarrhea, slurred speech, and/or seizures in the past 10 days, please do not enter the laboratory collection site. You may still place your order now, but wait until the aforementioned time frames have passed before arriving at the laboratory collection site. If you are experiencing a life threatening emergency, please call 911.

How accurate is this test?

The accuracy of a lab test is measured in "sensitivity" and "specificity". Sensitivity is the test's ability to correctly identify those with antibodies (true positives) and specificity is the test's ability to identify those without the antibodies (true negatives). According to independent studies from Abbott Labs, Quest Diagnostics and the University of Washington, this test has a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99.6% making it the most accurate COVID-19 antibody test currently available.

This test is authorized to be performed and marketed by the FDA. This testing service is based on a newly released test system from Abbott and will be run on Abbott's ARCHITECT i1000SR and i2000SR laboratory instruments.

How do I get my results?

You will receive an email notification when results are ready with instructions to access our HIPAA-compliant secure messaging portal to obtain a copy of your results.

How long will it take for results to be available?

In most cases, results will be available within 24 hours of the blood draw. In rare cases, due to increased demand, resulting may take up to 2 days.

Is fasting required for this test?

Fasting is not required for this test.

Is the marketing of this test authorized by the FDA?

This test is authorized to be performed and marketed by the FDA. This testing service is based on a newly released test system from Abbott and will be run on Abott's ARCHITECT i1000SR and i2000SR laboratory instruments. These instruments can run up to 100-200 tests an hour.

Abbott first made this test available as part of the US FDA notification process without an Emergency Use Authorization pathway outlined in “Policy for Diagnostic Test for Coronavirus Disease – 2019 during the Public Health Emergency – Immediately in Effect Guidance for Clinical Laboratories, commercial manufacturers, and Food and Drug Administration Staff” issued on March 16th, 2020. The FDA acknowledged the marketing and distribution of this new antibody serology test on April 13th, 2020. Abbott was granted FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) on April 26th, 2020.

Is this a blood test or a swab?

This test requires a blood draw collection from the arm to detect COVID-19 IgG antibodies in the blood. Antibodies in the blood indicate a previous COVID-19 infection. Although It may take up to 14 days after the onset of symptoms for antibodies to be developed within the body, 91% of people develop such antibodies within the first 8-13 days. Some people infected with COVID-19 will never exhibit symptoms but will have a detectable antibody response.

Is this a test I can take at home?
