Oyster Allergy Test

This IgE antibody allergy test uses a small blood sample to determine if you are allergic to oysters, a common shellfish.

Oysters are seafood that can be consumed either raw or cooked. When they are consumed raw, they are actually considered to be still alive. Oysters are used as ingredients in things like soups and sauces.

The scientific name for oyster is Crassostrea gigas. An oyster is considered a mollusk. Other Mollusks include:

• Mussels
• Octopus
• Squid
• Scallops
• Snails

If you are allergic to a mollusk, you are highly likely to be allergic to crustacea as well. The following crustacea may have a similar protein to oysters which would cause an allergic reaction:

• Shrimp
• Prawn
• Crabs
• Crayfish
• Lobsters

An allergic reaction to oysters may involve symptoms such as:

• Hives
• Dizziness
• Swelling
• Trouble breathing
• Stomach pain

If you experience trouble breathing or it is difficult to remain conscious, this is called anaphylactic shock and is considered a medical emergency, you should seek help immediately.
