Rubella Antibodies Test (IgG & IgM)

This Rubella IgG and IgM antibody test confirms whether or not an individual has been vaccinated for Rubella, has immunity to it, and/or has a current Rubella infection. This blood test confirms whether or not an individual was vaccinated for the Rubella virus by detecting the presence or absence of IgG antibodies to the virus; it also can determine whether or not a person who was not vaccinated for Rubella currently has an active or inactive Rubella infection based upon the presence or absence of IgG and IgM antibodies to the virus. If an individual was not immunized for Rubella contracted the virus, but no longer has an active infection they will have IgG antibodies-- whereas, an individual with a current, active Rubella infection will have IgM antibodies present.

The Rubella virus is the cause of German measles which usually results in a mild rash, however, when acquired in utero, the rubella virus can cause congenital rubella syndrome leading to fetal death, malformation, deafness and mental retardation.
