Estrogen Test, Total

The estrogen test measures the total amounts of the estrogen in the blood. Estrogens are the hormones responsible for female sexual development and function. Estrogens are secreted by the gonads, adrenal glands, and placenta.

Normal estrogen results depend upon the sex and age of the person being tested. With women, it also depends upon their menstrual cycle or whether they are pregnant.

Total estrogens provide an overall picture of estrogen status for men and women.

What Each Test Measures

Estrone (E1):

A weaker estrogen primarily produced after menopause, E1 is synthesized from androstenedione and serves as a reservoir that can be converted into estradiol as needed. It helps in maintaining estrogen levels when ovarian function declines.

Estradiol (E2):

The most potent and biologically active form of estrogen, E2 plays a key role in regulating the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and secondary sexual characteristics. It is the dominant estrogen in premenopausal women and is crucial for reproductive and bone health.

Estriol (E3):

The least potent of the three, E3 is predominantly produced during pregnancy by the placenta. Measuring E3 is particularly relevant in prenatal screening but may also help assess overall estrogen metabolism and balance.
