Note: Fasting is not required for this test.

This blood test is used to detect herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 infections (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and to determine which type is present.

HSV-1 and HSV-2 are common, incurable viruses that can cause oral and genital herpes. Herpes is spread through infected bodily fluids like saliva, semen, and vaginal secretions or through skin-to-skin contact.

In some cases, HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections can cause encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes). Patients who are immunocompromised or who have underlying skin issues are at risk of developing disseminated HS, in which the virus diffuses to sites throughout the body.

What is a PCR test for herpes?

This test is able to help diagnose a herpes infection through polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In contrast to the HerpeSelect® Tests, which searches for antibodies the body produces in response to infection, this herpes DNA test looks for the genetic material of the virus itself. The PCR blood test is able to detect and quantify infection, even when the material is present in very small amounts, because the amplification technique used in the lab makes numerous copies of the DNA for easier identification.

How accurate is a PCR test for herpes?

This test is very accurate and is more sensitive than HSV antibody testing and cultures.
