About Our Trichomoniasis Test
Note: Fasting is not required for this test.
This urine test for both men and women checks for Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by parasitic protozoans, Trichomonas. Trichomoniasis is the most common curable STD and, according to the CDC, approximately 3.7 million people have the infection.
The recommended minimum window period for the Trichomoniasis Test is:
- 3-7 days post potential exposure.
Trichomonas (also commonly known as trich) is transmitted during sexual contact and affects men and women differently. In cases of trich in men, the urethra is affected, while in women the lower genital tract is affected. Trichomoniasis infections cause symptoms in less than one-third of cases. Since this STD often doesn't result in symptoms (especially in men), it is easily spread because individuals spread it to their partner unknowingly. It is important for both partners to get tested (and treated if necessary) to prevent getting reinfected.
In men, trichomoniasis is typically symptomless, but can result in the following symptoms: Mild urethral discharge, pain and burning when urinating or during ejaculation, and/or irritation inside the penis. In women, symptoms of Trichomoniasis appear as: Painful urination; greenish-yellow, frothy vaginal discharge with a strong odor; discomfort during intercourse; vaginal itching and irritation and/or vaginitis (an irritation of the vulva or vagina). This STD is known to cause pregnancy complications including premature births and low birth weights in infants, so it is important to get tested.
The average incubation period for detecting the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis ranges from a few days to a few weeks after initial contact.
Rather than the typical invasive swab testing that is often performed for trichomoniasis testing, our trich test is a painless urine test. As such, it is important for customers to withhold urination for at least 1-2 hours before the specimen collection. For best test results, customers should provide a 'first catch' of urine (approximately 20-30 ml) from the initial stream into the collection cup and allow the remainder of the stream to go into the toilet as larger volumes may dilute the specimen and reduce sensitivity.
