How Do We Diagnose Syphilis?
The RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) is our doctor recommended initial syphilis screen test. This test looks for antibodies which would indicate a syphilis infection. If the RPR test is reactive, then antibodies were detected which may indicate a current or past syphilis infection. If this occurs, the lab will confirm the infection by performing a quantitative titer test to determine the concentration of antibodies in the blood sample. If the ratio of antibodies is at or higher than 1:4, the next step would be the T. Padillum test, which is recommended by the CDC to confirm an active syphilis infection.
Is There a Cure for Syphilis?
Syphilis is completely treatable and curable. If you test positive for syphilis, you should seek out an antibiotic treatment called penicillin. The antibiotic will kill the bacterium called Treponema pallidum which causes syphilis. Killing Treponema pallidum will prevent further damage but it will not reverse the damage that has already been caused by the infection, which is why it’s incredibly important to test for syphilis regularly in order to catch it in its early stages.
